Getty Villa

J. Paul Getty wanted visitors to experience Greek and Roman art in a setting that would bring the objects to life.
— Getty Villa Map & Highlights

The Getty Villa is modeled after a grand country residence from Pompeii, the city destroyed by the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in AD 79. Architecturally, the museum’s layout and details fully immerse visitors similar to that of Missions. Colors, pillar motifs, ceiling art, stone roads—architecture alone, there’s lot to see.

Herb Garden

The Herb Garden contains species from the Mediterranean that would’ve been used for cooking and medicine.

Inner Peristyle

Outdoor fountain and garden with covered walkways. Along its halls are doors leading to exhibitions housing Greek and Roman art. The Temple of Hercules can be found here along with stairs that lead to more exhibition rooms.

Outer Peristyle

Outdoor garden and fountain with covered walkways (for rainy days and shade), shrubbery, and sculptures. I’ve witnessed two marriage proposals happening from the vantage point of the first image.

East Garden

The garden is a replica from a house found in the Pompeii ruins. More intimate than the peristyle gardens.
